WEST BEND — It took the St. Edmond boys about 16 minutes to warm up, but after that it was all Gaels.
St. Edmond (7-9 overall) snapped a four-game losing streak, earning a 51-34 win over West Bend-Mallard (4-10) on Thursday night.
The Gaels, who will play in the 1A playoff squad, went unbeaten against the 1A schools, earning their third victory.
“It was really nice to play against a school our size,” St. Edmond head coach Adolph Kochendorfer said. “These are the type of teams we will see in the playoffs.
St. Edmond has five games remaining, against 3A Humboldt, Webster City, Clear Lake and Algona schools as well as Pocahontas Area.
The two sides were tied at 15-15 at half-time, before the Gaels went on a 16-6 run and beat Wolverines 36-19 in the second half.
“We played well offensively and defensively in the third quarter,” Kochendorfer said. “Noah (Simpson) hit a few big threes and that laid them out and allowed us to find Hayden (Mayer), who was slipping through.
“We also did a good job on the defensive boards.”
Mayer led the Gaels with 22 points. Simpson had 11 and Sam Mericle added 10.
“Sam started for us and he handled it well and did a good job,” Kochendorfer said.
Sam Fehr paced the Wolverines with 10, while Mitch Stevens added eight.
The Gaels are back in action on Friday when they travel to face Humboldt (3A). Tipping is set at approximately 7:45 p.m.
