Real Madrid defender wants to see his career at the club- Reports

Real Madrid defender Marcelo would like to stay at the Santiago Bernabeu. The Brazilian’s contract with Los Blancos is due to expire at the end of the season.

According to Marca, Marcelo is eager to end his career at the club but knows it’s not up to him. The 33-year-old is believed to have received offers from a number of Brazilian clubs and MLS’s Inter Miami.

Marcelo joined Real Madrid from Fluminese in 2007. He became one of the best left-backs of his generation during his time with the Spanish giants. The left-back also scored 38 goals and provided 102 assists in 542 appearances during his time in the Spanish capital.

He helped the club win five La Liga titles, two Copa Del Rey trophies and four Champions League titles. Marcelo, however, had to settle for a small role this season. The veteran defender is currently behind France left-back Ferland Mendy in the pecking order. He has only made 14 appearances in all competitions.

Real Madrid are currently top of the La Liga table, eleven points ahead of second-placed Sevilla, with just nine games remaining this season. Carlo Ancelotti’s men are therefore the favorites to win the league title this season.

The club are set to face stiff competition from Barcelona for the league title next season. The Catalan giants improved dramatically under Xavi Hernandez and claimed a 4-0 victory over the 2019-20 La Liga champions in El Clasico before the international break.

Ancelotti will therefore be keen to make some statement signings this summer. However, the club need to part ways with some fringe players to free up the necessary funds to sign their main transfer targets.

Marcelo is believed to earn £330,000 a week at the Bernabeu. It is therefore unlikely that Real Madrid will offer him a contract extension and will be eager to get rid of his mammoth salary from their wage bill.

Moreover, Real Madrid haven’t been shy about parting ways with club legends in the past. The Spanish giants refused to meet Sergio Ramos’ wage demands and allowed the 36-year-old to terminate his contract. He joined Paris Saint-Germain on a free transfer last summer.

According to The Sun, Real Madrid are keen on signing Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney as they see him as the ideal replacement for Marcelo. The Scottish left-back has become one of the Premier League’s best full-backs since joining the Gunners from Celtic in 2019 in a deal worth £25m.

Tierney has formed a formidable partnership with Brazilian defender Gabriel Magalhaes on the left side of the Arsenal defence. He has made 25 appearances for the Gunners this season and helped propel the club to fourth in the table.

The 24-year-old’s consistency, defensive abilities and work-rate have caught the eye of Los Blancos, who are reportedly preparing a £50m bid for the defender. The Scotland international will offer fierce competition to Ferland Mendy for a place in the Spanish side’s starting line-up if he moves to the Santiago Bernabeu this summer.
