Manchester United are now likely to keep outcast Phil Jones despite an announced surprise move to Bordeaux, according to reports. Jones was linked with the Ligue 1 club in a potential loan deal.
The defender recently made his first appearance in almost two years in United’s 3-1 win over Burnley in early January.
Injuries and the arrival of several big-name stars meant Jones had not featured since January 2020.
He performed well against the Clarets, earning praise from Rangnick. “I think he did well, having not played for two years at this kind of level,” the interim head coach said.
“We didn’t see that (the effects of the absence) in the game. He did his job and did exactly what I expected of him.
However, Jones was still tipped to leave Old Trafford during the winter transfer window.

The 29-year-old has been pushed down the pecking order due to the in-form returns of Raphael Varane and club captain Harry Maguire.
A few Premier League clubs have been mooted as possible destinations for the former England international, but French side Bordeaux have emerged as the most likely.
Several reports have suggested the former Blackburn Rovers star could move on a temporary deal.
But that now seems unlikely. According to Manchester Evening News, Jones is at Carrington training and will ‘miss’ the Old Trafford outing on deadline day.
Meanwhile, United are set to allow Donny van de Beek to launch his Premier League career at Everton.
The Dutch midfielder will join a season-long loan after the Toffees edged out Crystal Palace in the race for his signature.
sports express understands Van de Beek had been in talks with a few clubs, including Palace, but it appears Everton’s appointment of Frank Lampard swung the deal in their favour.
MEN also claim that Jesse Lingard is at Carrington and is running out of time to secure a transfer. The midfielder is out of contract at the end of the season and could leave in early July.
