Construction begins on Moyer Carriage Lofts at the historic Moyer Factory Complex, New York

The construction of Moyer Carriage Lofts, a $55 million affordable and supportive housing building in the historic four-building Moyer Factory complex in Syracuse, a city and the seat of Onondaga County, New York, USA, has started according to Governor Kathy Hochul.

The Moyer factory complex, erected in 1881 but unoccupied since 2005, will undergo a historic metamorphosis as a result of the project. It will be adaptively repurposed to provide 128 apartments and 3,670 square feet of commercial space. Four interconnected buildings will be gutted, but the exterior architectural aspects will be preserved.

All units will be affordable for families earning less than 60% of the region’s median income. Residents will have access to on-site services supported by the Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative and administered by the New York State Office of Mental Health in 50 apartments designated as support units. Counseling and case management will be part of the support services provided.

Moyer Carriage Lofts to help make New York housing more accessible, equal and stable

The project is part of Governor Hochul’s statewide strategy to make housing more accessible, equal and stable.

The governor successfully secured a new five-year, $25 billion comprehensive housing plan in the recently passed state budget that will increase housing supply by creating or preserving 100,000 affordable housing units in New York City, including 10,000 with support services for vulnerable populations, as well as the electrification of 50,000 additional households.

Investing in the renovation of abandoned and neglected historic buildings across the state is essential to the revival and prosperity of communities like Syracuse.

We will continue to address the housing issue by prioritizing initiatives such as Moyer Carriage Lofts that improve the lives of individuals and empower communities,” Governor Hochul said.
