Bolton wrestlers triumph in league opener

Bolton Olympic Wrestling Club opened the inaugural senior league season with a thrilling one-point victory as their young stars shone.

BOWC triumphed 16-15 against Aspull Warriors to make a perfect start to their maiden league campaign.

The Bears – who traveled to Wigan for their opener – were buoyed by impressive performances from their young talent, with teenagers Hamza Hussain and Charlie Meadows picking up victories in the 65kg and 70kg weight classes respectively.

The league itself has eight wrestling clubs in total and gives athletes the opportunity to gain experience outside of national tournaments.

Head coach Mack Chambers, who oversaw the club’s victory alongside Lee Meadows and Jesse Bradbury, made it clear how beneficial the new league is for wrestlers, young and old, nationwide.

He said: “This league is a great way for younger members of the UK wrestling community to gain valuable competitive experience against older members so they are better prepared for bigger competition at senior level.

“It’s also a chance for our most experienced members, both inexperienced and veteran, to have the chance to test their skills in front of an audience.

“It benefits wrestlers of all ages because as the league grows there is an opportunity to have skill divisions with the higher divisions earning money.”

The Bears coach also explained how the club aims to support the local community and encouraged those interested in the sport to get involved.

“[The club] is really beneficial to our local community,” Chambers said.

“The way we’ve put it together is that it’s for all ages.

“We have a wide range of experiences; from men and women who are going to compete in national championships, to people who have very little competition experience and just want a challenge.

“It provides a safe place to get in shape and learn the value of hard work.

“Like boxing and jiu jitsu, it often helps young people stay out of trouble by giving them a focus for their energy.”

BOWC’s next game is on October 22, where they take on Manchester Y-Club with a venue yet to be confirmed.
